Tasmanian Gas Safety Update: LPG Cylinders on Decks

Tasmania Gas Safety Update: LPG Cylinders on Decks

Tasmanian Gas Safety have issued a reminder on the safety hazard of LPG gas cylinders sitting directly on timber decks or structures not suitable for supporting the bottles. This is especially relevant for those involved in residential designs.

Recent inspection results have identified several non-compliances related to gas installation supply points. Non-compliant LPG supply points present significant safety hazards, particularly in the event of a fire.

It is imperative for gasfitters to note that LPG cylinders supplying gas installation must not be installed on a deck or balcony. These supply points are only permissible on a verandah nominally at ground level, in accordance with the requirements of AS/NZS1594.

When practitioners come across this issue on existing installations, they should:

  • Document their finding
  • Notify the owner of the non-compliance in writing
  • Notify the Director of Gas Safety at CBOS: info@justice.tas.gov.au
