You can apply for HCAA Full Membership as a Hydraulic Services Designer or Fire Services Designer. The criteria for each of these is described below. The annual cost is $500 (plus GST).


Apply as a Hydraulic Services Designer

Shall have a minimum of six (6) years’ experience as a hydraulic services designer, and be practicing in the hydraulic services profession.

Where employed as a hydraulic services designer in an office the member shall have a minimum of six (6) years’ experience as a hydraulic services designer, hold the Diploma of Hydraulic Services Design or equivalent qualification and the office must be directed by or have as a Principal a person who is eligible for FULL membership of this Association. The membership committee may waive two (2) years' experience for graduates of an approved course at diploma level.

Required Documentation

Applicants shall provide proof of meeting the following to the Management Committee:

  • Six (6) years’ experience as a Hydraulic Services Designer working for a recognized Hydraulic Services Consultant or Multi-Discipline Consulting Engineering Firm in the Hydraulic Services Division.
  • Demonstrate competence (qualifications and experience) in the design and documentation and inspection of the following service types:
    • Sanitary and trade waste drainage
    • Packaged sewerage treatment plants and pumping stations
    • Soil and water management
    • Rainwater gutters and downpipes
    • Stormwater and sub-soil drainage (roof and general paved catchments, including on-side stormwater detention systems)
    • Water services of various temperatures potable and non-potable, including gravity, circulation and pressurized systems
    • Fire hydrant and hose reel services
    • Natural and LP gas services
  • Certified copy of other relevant discipline qualification obtained from a recognised University or College.
  • Letter from Employer/s outlining extent of design work carried out in the Hydraulic Services Discipline and examples and roles on projects undertaken and positions held e.g. Team Leader/Design Engineer.
  • A statement from two (2) Referees from past or present company one being a Full Member of the HCAA.

Apply as a Fire Services Designer

Shall have a minimum of six (6) years’ experience as a fire services consultant, and be practicing in the fire services profession.

Where employed as a fire services consultant in an office, the member shall have a minimum of six (6) years’ experience as a fire services consultant, hold the Diploma of Fire Systems Design or equivalent qualification. The office must be directed by or have as a Principal a person who is eligible for FULL membership of this Association. The membership committee may waive two (2) years' experience for graduates of an approved course at diploma level.

Required Documentation

  • Six (6) years’ experience as a Fire Services Designer working for a recognised  Fire Services Consultant or Multi-Discipline Consulting Engineering Firm in the Fire Services Division.
  • Demonstrate competence (qualifications and experience) in the design and documentation and inspection of the following service types:
    • Fire hydrant and hose reel services
    • Fire sprinkler and supression systems
    • Fire electrical systems
  • Certified copy of other relevant discipline qualification obtained from a recognised University or College.
  • Letter from Employer/s outlining extent of design work carried out in the Hydraulic Services Discipline and examples and roles on projects undertaken and positions held e.g. Team Leader/Design Engineer.
  • A statement from two (2) Referees from past or present company one being a Full Member of the HCAA.

Memberships are based on a financial year and are subject to change. The pro-rata fee will be calculated upon application.
